After reading Doctorow’s article on trolling I believe that
there are two types of trolls that exist on the Internet. The first troll is
the person that goes looking for a fight by joining a new website or blog, provoking
people who do not want to be involved. The second troll happens accidentally,
where two individuals may not agree on a topic; leading to arguments that can escalate
quickly across the Internet. To solve the problem of a troll trolling people
need to ignore the comments he/she makes because if we react to his/her mean
comments you’re just adding fuel to the their fire. Before putting a conversely
comment on a website make sure you can held if there is any back lash, better
yet do some research around the website and make sure it is a community that
you feel comfortable expressing your opinions. Trolls will go away if you don’t
cross their paths!
In the community I chose (MakeupAlley)from the outside it looks like it
would not have many trolls per say because it is a beauty community. But by
just typing in trolling into the search engine on the website resulted in pages
of results. The interest part that I saw was because this website is all about makeup, the majority was women on women trolling. Making fun of others and how they
look and their expression of makeup. The comments ended with the thread they
were posted on but the people affect by the trolling probably never trusted the
trollers again and stay clear of their profile.
The third link on the picture shows that there are people trying to control this negative influence on the website which is good to see, because beauty communities should be positive!
