Trolls have taken on an entirely different form than they did when I was growing up. They are no longer the toys I played with or the monster under the bridge in 3 Billy Goats Gruff.
No matter what community you are in, or what context you communicate, there will always be those people that TROLL. Trolling is the act of purposely disrupting, picking fights, with a community. The most recent form of trolling is online. It does not surprise me at all that this online phenomenon of trolling has reached the level that it has. We all know people who are very confrontational. We see them in school, at bars and now we see them online. People that go out of their way to pick fights. The only difference between trolls online and in the bar are that there are no consequences for online trollers. Quite often when there is a confrontation in person there are consequences for it. This is not the case in an online setting. It all comes back to the anonymity question we initially wrote about. Because there are no consequences for these trolls they are next to impossible to monitor.
The community that I have decided to join for this project is TheChive. I'm sure everyone has seen their shirts and heard their slogans. Basically TheChive is an online blog where people can post things under certain threads. Threads include Videos, Randomness, Pictures and inside all of these are more specific sub-threads. This morning I was reading through an album that was posted about funny Facebook pictures and posts. In the comment section and individual made a random comment that had nothing to do with the album and the troll got the exact reaction he was looking for. What this Chiver (Ghettoblaster) should have done was ignore him. Stay true to your slogan instead of feeding the fire...
