Trolls are like bullies but on the Internet. However, they choose to make it seem funny than really try to hurt someones' feelings. In some cases at least they're not truly trying to hurt anyone. The one I've experienced have always tried to pick fights and try to get some fun out of it because it bothers peoples. It seems like without the face to face confrontation, online trolls feel that they can cause as much trouble as they please without consequences. That's the most likely reason why they become surprised when in real life users confront them about it, because they think they'll never be caught. It's the same situation as when someone tries to ignore a bully. Don't give a reaction and the bully will go away. Trolls are likely to be the same. Pay no attention to them and they'll see what they're doing is silly and stop it soon.
My community the Showtime Fan community for the TV series Dexter doesn't seem to have much trolls from what I could find. I went around and looked but nothing! It seems everyone in the community I have found are very supportive of each other because they share a common interest and want nothing negative on the website. As well as, Showtime runs the boards and messages. I'm sure they wouldn't tolerate that kind of behavior. Logically speaking, I'm sure anyone would speak up to defend their own thoughts but it's best to keep out of huge fights over the Internet. Nothing is more frighting than a computer screen replying back in caps lock. No I believe if something needs to be said it should be said in person.
