Is texting, lolcats, or other forms of online communication harming or improving
people’s ability to communicate in writing or in speech?
Malignant forms of communication are dwindling formal speech and writing skills of children and adults while also affecting the cognitive capabilities to communicate.
There is a negative impact proposed upon proper communication skills when we start shortening English words, adding commas, periods, question marks in places where it is not necessary. Skills such as grammar and sentence structure are being destroyed by the new forms or communication such as mobile texting and online messaging. The word limits that are applied is affecting the way one can communicate, in my opinion it is decreasing the cognitive capabilities of mankind.Setup instructions for a new desk comes with a long set of instructions that are heavily detailed and precise, it would be impossible for someone to setup a desk based less precise and detailed instructions. The point is the details and structure is eliminated because of texting habits and for heavy texters it would be very difficult to communicate formally. Studies have shown that children who text message at least 3 times a day have troubles with formal writing a speech compared to those who do not text (Plester,Wood, & Joshi, 2009, p. 137). To me this was not surprising because in my opinion children are more prone to communicative damage than an adult.
