The Purpose of Memes

I am actually a huge fan of memes. I was only introduced to them about a year ago but have been hooked ever since. I frequent sites such as 9gag and Imgur because i find these sites have the most straightforward set up.
 If you are someone who is looking for a form of entertainment that does not include a lot of thinking or reading then memes would definitely interest you. They are a very fun and easy way to communicate with people and usually tell a joke or story without really saying much. Since memes usually consist of one picture or short comic and a few lines of writing they can be universally understood and appreciated. Memes often will have an ongoing theme of whatever is popular at that time. For example:

This meme took two things that were popular in the entertainment industry (the song "call me maybe" and the movie "Taken") and put them together in one meme to make fun of together. In this way memes can be very relatable and easy to understand because they contain extremely well known and popular images or subjects. As well as being hilarious and easy entertainment, memes also have a way of bringing people with one similar interest together...to make fun of things.
