A Case For Pseudonyms

I didn't know much about the idea of pseudonyms before reading this article, or about the controversies surrounding them; but even after reading the article it's hard to say which side i'm on. On the one hand having a double identity or the ability to remain anonymous could be a positive thing. It could give people the ability to be apart of an online community without being discriminated against or judged in any way by their name or background. Also it could prevent people from bias. Some people will make snap judgments based on peoples sex, race and background. All of which could be inferred by someones full "real" name. For example if someones real name was Barbie and they were trying to make a comment on an academic article they may be automatically pegged as a ditzy girl (based on a children's barbie doll) and their opinion might be written off or ignored. In this aspect having an online persona could be very beneficial to society.

On the other hand it could be dangerous and pose as a risk to peoples safety. As said in the article using full real names could help to prevent against online bullying and even stalking. If someone attempts to bully someone online while using their real name it is easier to report them. Knowing this may stop people from bullying all together since there are obvious consequences that are easier to achieve knowing real names. In the same way this could stop something as serious as stalking, because if someone begins by stalking or harassing online, knowing their real name makes it easy for the victim to report the stalker to the police. Where as with a pseudonym someone could say or do anything without being held responsible.

Given the positives and negatives of both sides, it is still hard to say whether anonymity or a pseudonym is the best options. Both could be successful and safe as long as they are used responsibly and with caution. People should still have the right to privacy and safety at the same time.
