Creating Character

InDividuaLitY

Freedom of expression is an idea that society values. We are taught at a young age to express ourselves and not to be hindered by the social norm. This is ingrained at such a young age that to be unique is the epitome of what creates such diversity in our populations. When constraints are placed upon how diverse and different we can be, it challenges what we value. Restricting individuality to allow everyone to fit the little niches that society deems acceptable has become what dictates how we behave. How can we be told to be are own person and take pleasure in things that appeal to our curiosity when society put "constraints" on what is acceptable.

Where is the freedom in that?

Pseudonyms are way for people to fit in. Having an aliases allows groups to identify with each other  or even share a common ground. For years writers have used aliases to create this persona to fit in correctly. Woman used to use male names when publishing their work so they could be heard and respected. Though the alias incorrectly represents the true nature of the woman writer, it allows them to fit in and share their knowledge and insight. They identified with their audience and appealed to what the masses would easily accept. In this case, woman became men, they adopted a persona to share a common ground. They became more credible because they were thought to be men.

Is it ethically right to take on a different persona? I believe that there are different situations that merit the use of pseudonyms. There is no black or white with this subject and I believe that, morally, the use of pseudonyms and anonymity can be warranted and necessary to achieve certains goals. The incorrect use of pseudonyms is where the problem lies. It is hard to warrant the allowance of some pseudonyms who are vying for a good cause and not allow others to use them. The shades of grey are hard to define, the lines cant be drawn up. Pseudonyms are a pathway of expression, but the pathways are limited by the constraints society has created.

Simply put, pseudonyms are not only a way to remain anonymous, they are also a way to reach a common ground or a common understanding. Though pseudonyms are primarily used to insure safety and anonymity, they can also be used to create an identity that is easily recognized in peer groups. Ethos is strengthened by individuality, it is the true character that shines through, the aliases only adds to the diversity.
